If you were a teenager before the age of beauty apps, you might be a bit jealous of kids these days. Back then, we had to live with our acne and bad hair days. There was no Instagram filter to fix our poorly conceived makeup experiments — looks that we didn’t even know were horrifying until we found pictures of ourselves decades later.
Today, however, anyone can download a beauty app from the Apple Store to look their best, even without years of makeup or hairstyling experience. (Oh, to be young today!) To help you sort through the clutter, here are the best beauty apps 2021.
Quick links to all these apps are at the bottom of the post.
Want to know what chemicals are in your makeup and skin products? Check out the Think Dirty app. There is a “Dirty Meter” in the app that rates the ingredients of your products on a scale of 0-10. You’ll know what is good for you, what is bad for you, and you’ll even get an explanation of why an ingredient is considered “bad.” Feel free to go through your entire collection of products with this app, just make sure to set aside lots of time.
Don’t have time to go to the salon but want to know how a color or pattern looks on your nails? Use the YouCam Nails app to take a picture of your nails and start to create a design right on your phone. When you finally get your nail appointment, bring your ideas to the manicurist and she’ll have something solid and concrete to work with.
We all know that sunlight ages our skin, causing wrinkles, freckles, and age spots. But sometimes, we forget to put on sunscreen. The UVLens app assesses your skin to see how at-risk you are. The paler your skin, the more damage UV light can do — and thus, the more diligent about sunscreen you’ll need to be. This app also tells you when UV light is at its strongest throughout the day so you avoid peak hours.
TroveSkin is sort of like a FitBit for your skin. You’ll first take a quiz to determine your skin type, then the app gives you tips and advice on what sorts of products to use. You can track your progress to see how well your skincare regimen is working out. Not only is this a great resource, it’s great if you end up going to see a dermatologist. Your doctor will know what treatments you’ve used, how you’ve responded to them, and what the next steps will be.
Garnier Color Match
Getting your hair dyed is a scary process. If things don’t go right, you can end up with some clashy colors for a while. The Garnier Color Match lets you “try out” one of their shades on the app so you can see how a certain color looks with your skin tone. You can digitally change the shade of a color so you know which one is the best match. Take the results to your hairdresser or do it confidently at home.
