When it comes to home security systems, many people like to gamble. They imagine they won’t get robbed or believe that these services are too expensive. Both ideas are incorrect. While the FBI does report that property crime has dropped more than 6%, it often happens to people who don’t have security systems. Likewise, these devices and services don’t just offer protection for your loved ones and property. The best home security systems in 2021 deliver peace of mind, alerts for fire and other hazards, energy and home insurance savings, and options many people can afford.

Here’s a look at the best home security systems in 2021.

Vivint Smart Home

Vivint offers one of the most cutting-edge systems available. On a single mobile app, you can control all components of the system, including porch cameras, alarm systems, and the innovative “Smart Deter” lurker detection. That last feature attempts to discourage would-be porch pirates before they even make it up your front steps.

Vivint systems were named by Safewise as the No. 1 best security system of 2021. They do require a monthly subscription with plans starting at $29.99/month.

Ring Alarm Security Kit

The Ring Alarm Security Kit is great if you want to install your system on your own. Plus, Amazon Prime* members can order their kit for less than $200. The Ring system interacts with other Ring devices, including smart locks and switches. That way, even if you’re sitting in the backyard, you can open the front door with a simple tap on your smartphone.

ADT Pulse

PC Mag rates the ADT Pulse as its No. 1 security system in the new year.

ADT, which has been in the home security game for a century and a half, is well-regarded for its excellent customer service. Day or night, ADT customers can rely on an agent to respond to a call. Plus, it has state-of-the-art mobile apps to help you keep track of your home security on any device.

That said, it is one of the more expensive services available, and it is not real DIY-friendly. The cheapest monthly option is $30, and that doesn’t include installation fees. You may also have to agree to a three-year contract. Still, if your peak concern is round-the-clock surveillance of your home, ADT is a safe choice.

SimpliSafe Home Security System

SimpliSafe earned the Reader’s Choice honor from fans of PC Mag, and it’s one of the best deals out there for home security. The company doesn’t require a long-term contract and you can customize your package, adding or dropping hardware as you see fit.

The smallest bundle, which costs $229, includes a base station, a wireless keypad, one motion sensor, one entry sensor, and a yard sign with decals. One downside is that most SimpliSafe packages don’t include a camera, which you can purchase for an additional cost.

Frontpoint is an excellent high-end option, much like ADT, but it comes without an installation service. That means you’ll save money on installation fees, but you’ll be required to assemble the system on your own.

Still, Frontpoint is fairly easy to set up and it offers excellent customer service. For $49.99/month, Frontpoint will provide you with mobile app access and control, “Crash & Smash” protection, live video feed, and 24/hour customer assistance. Plus, they offer a free 30-day trial!
